New Photos - At Last!

Posted on September 03, 2009 by Kari Chisholm | Comments (1) | fun

As you all know by now, we're pretty lousy at updating Jake's blog! Chalk it up to having to update blogs all day long for our clients, but somehow it just never happens.

But we're reasonably good at uploading the occasional photo. So we're going to stop even pretending to update the blog and just focus on putting up pictures. You can at least see how much Jake is growing - even if we don't write about it!

I've gone through all our photos for the last year and uploaded a whole ton - keep hitting refresh and you'll see more. Hope you enjoy them!

A couple of weeks ago, Jake took his cousins to the zoo. Here's a short four-minute video - narrated by Joonas.

Jake learns how to jump!

Posted on March 16, 2008 by Kari Chisholm | Comments (4) |

A week ago, we installed one of those bouncing-baby jumper things. At first, Jake didn't get it. He definitely seemed to enjoy being vertical (and being at Potter's height), but the whole jumping thing eluded him.

Then, last night, while Grandpa Terry and Grandma Karen were babysitting... suddenly, Jake figured it out. In a big way.

Check it out.

Jake's first music video

Wow. Has it really been six weeks since we've posted here? We better get on the ball. Need to get some new photos up too -- the little dude is growing fast.

Last night, I was playing around with an amazing new website called In just 20 minutes, they produced Jake's first music video.

Amazing, eh?

Definitely need to get the rest of those photos up here - and a video produced of his first 12 weeks.

Jake mentioned in the Wall Street Journal

Posted on December 11, 2007 by Kari Chisholm | Comments (4) |

OK, so I'm not going to make a habit of talking about the little guy with reporters - but sometimes, it just happens.

Over the last couple of weeks, between diaper changes, I've been pursuing my annual obsession with the Heisman Trophy. (For six straight years, I've correctly predicted the winner - and his margin of victory. Look, everyone needs a hobby.)

Anyway, the "Numbers Guy" at the WSJ - Carl Bialik - explained how it is that I do it each year:

Despite the Heisman Trust’s secrecy, media voters often announce their ballots in columns or on air, ahead of the award presentation. Mr. Chisholm and his tipsters gather as many of these declared votes as possible, then smooth any discrepancies arising from over- or under-sampling certain regions. ...

How is he so accurate? Political surveys tend to include 500 to 1,000 likely voters out of a populace of at least tens of thousands. Mr. Chisholm, by contrast, is surveying from an overall voter pool of under 1,000, and each year, he claims to reach at least 13% of those ballots. This year, he got more than 25%, all while juggling the care of his newborn. “I did a lot of it with him sleeping on my lap,” Mr. Chisholm said.

Nice. Good work, Jake!

3 Weeks Today!

Posted on December 02, 2007 by Carrie Wynkoop | Comments (6) |

It's hard to believe it's been three weeks since Jake was born. Sometimes it seems like an eternity, sometimes it seems like the days just fly by!

Sorry for not posting anything in the last two weeks, it's been a little crazy. This is likely to be a pretty long post so I'm going to put most of this on another page to not take up so much room on this main page.

Heading home today...

Thanks so much for all the great comments. I've been reading them to Carrie over the last couple of days. Sorry for the lack of another recent post, or more photos, but we've been kinda busy! :)

We're starting to get the hang of this new-parent thing. No matter how many classes you take, and how many books you read, and how many friends with babies, there's nothing like trying to manage it all at once. There's a lot of things to pay attention to all at once - and most of your decisions are made on 'feel'. It's sort of like learning to drive a stick-shift. You can read about it forever, and get someone to explain it to you... but until you feel the pedals - and steer, and brake, and not get lost - all at once...

Anyway, we ended up staying an extra day. No crisis, they just wanted to watch Jake's weight a little closer, since he dropped a bit more than they'd normally expect. He's climbing back up toward his birth weight now, and we're heading home today.

Meanwhile, here's a few more pictures.

And our favorite one so far. You see, our friends Amy & Darin have a great tradition. When their daughter Faith was born, they took a photo with a little stuffed bunny. Over the first year, they took lots more photos with the bunny - and even kept up the tradition on birthdays. (She's in first grade now.) Over time, flipping through those photos, you see how fast the kid grows.

So, this is Jake, with his little stuffed Potter puppy - and expect to see lots more of them!

Well, it took a bit longer than we expected but at 7:52 p.m., we met little Jake Joseph Wynkoop Chisholm! He emerged happy and healthy (and a little noisy) weighing in at 7 lbs. 4 oz. and 19 inches long.

The afternoon of laboring took quite a while. We finally got to the pushing phase at around 5 p.m. or so. Carrie pushed and persevered and was just so amazingly strong. But after a couple of hours, the midwife invited the doc in to take a look - and he made the case for a C-section.

So, we headed to the O.R. Good thing, too. Because it turns out that at some point in the process, Jake had flipped over and was "sunny-side up".

We're now settled back in the room. Carrie's resting, and Jake was active for almost four hours. He ate well on his first try, and the nurses are doing their usual fussing over him.

Tomorrow, I'll post photos!

Sunday, November 11

Posted on November 11, 2007 by Kari Chisholm | Comments (3) |

Well, it's been a productive and exciting morning so far. After a few hours of halfway-decent sleep, we were both up in the wee hours - and the usual pangs started up again. Only this time, without the assistance of the special baby cocktail. So, that was a very good thing.

By early morning, the contractions were strong and long - and not exactly comfy. So, Carrie decided to move ahead to the epidural.

Wow. Modern medicine is an amazing thing. The pain evaporated, even though the contractions were proceeding apace - and we were both able to get a couple more hours of sleep.

By late morning, our baby team was debating whether or not to move things along by breaking Carrie's water for her -- when at noon, her water broke all by itself!

Things definitely seem to be moving along at a quicker pace - and the nurses are making bets as to which hour this afternoon we'll see Baby Jake.

Pretty exciting - today is Zack Wagner's fifth birthday. For Rob and I to both have our sons born on the same day is somehow pretty cool. I'm sure Zack will be a great honorary big brother to Jake (especially once Jake is old enough to play ball!)

More updates later...

Saturday, November 10

Posted on November 10, 2007 by Kari Chisholm | Comments (4) |

Well, we're at the hospital and just waiting for things to get really moving. Lots of nice people around, Carrie's hooked up to some special baby cocktail, and we're waiting... a little reading, a little napping, a couple of bad movies, (a little football!), and mostly waiting.

Update, 10:15 p.m. Well, no little Jake yet! The inducing process is going well, lots of good contractions, but they're going to tone it down for a few hours - to try and give Carrie a chance to nap a little. At one point, the midwife said that "The baby couldn't be doing any better. He's in great shape!" -- so that's a good thing. At this point, we're probably looking like tomorrow morning or so.

Stay tuned!

Almost there!

Well, I went to the doc with Carrie today - and while there's still not much going in there, we're excited to report that we've got a date!

Yup, if lil' Jake doesn't show up before then, we'll be doing the inducing-thing on Saturday morning.

So, stay tuned! Can't wait to meet him in person!

Still waiting!

Posted on November 04, 2007 by Kari Chisholm | Comments (2) |

Well, it's Sunday night - and that puts us a full day after the due date. And still, no sign of lil' Jake!

A friend of mine, who also works in politics, said that due dates are sort of like polling data - everything is plus or minus five!

So, Carrie and I spent Saturday getting outside a bit. The weather is beautiful, and it's probably going to be one of the last sunny days of the year -- and we'll be inside a lot with Jake in the early months. We went up to Sauvie Island, drove around all the farms up there, stopped at Kruger Farm and picked up some local organic veggies. Potter also got to get off-leash and chase the local organic geese. They weren't particularly interested in playing - and flew off amid much squawking.

We're very anxious to meet Jake - and I know y'all are too! I have this crazy idea that he's going to be born on election day (tuesday) but that's probably just wishful thinking!

We'll be sure to post a note here when he arrives (and we'll be sure to call family when we head to the hospital!)

Pictures, emails, announcements, etc.

Posted on October 31, 2007 by Carrie Wynkoop | Comments (5) |

Folks have begun to ask how we'll get the word out when Jake arrives so I thought I'd just post something brief right here. Our friends and family have gotten several emails about Jake throughout the pregnancy and we finally sent off a note to formally let our clients know as well. So hopefully there won't be any big surprises out there!

Once he's born and we've had some time to recoup, we'll send out an email to friends/family with the details and a picture or two and we'll do the same with clients. After that, we'll rely primarily on this blog to keep folks up to date and to share pictures. See the awesome Flickr photo gallery on the right here. Feel free to click on any of the photos to see a larger one or order a print.

We took some photos of Jake's room so those of you who aren't close can see what it looks like. We also had some photos taken with Potter, our "first" baby so we could remember what this time was like. Melissa at Dimples Photography was wonderful to work with!

Waiting, waiting, waiting

Posted on October 31, 2007 by Carrie Wynkoop | Comments (7) |

I hate waiting. No surprise there to many of you! I'm now 39.5 weeks and the due date is Saturday, November 3. Doctor said yesterday that he's moved down into the right position, now we're waiting on my body to realize that it's time to get going! Some contractions going on, but not enough to really get things moving yet. I know, it's still early but I can hope, can't I?

At next week's appointment we'll start talking about inducement, etc. They won't even allow me to make an appointment to be induced until I've officially reached 41 weeks - but when I reach 42 weeks they'll induce me no matter what. So, we'll have a week to play with and make some decisions. Let's just hope it doesn't come down to that.

In my zealousness to be overly organized and ready for whenever Jake decided to arrive, I'm pretty much done with his room, washed his clothes, packed the labor bag, etc. and am now bored to death! Yes, trying to sleep although that's not easy these days, and now starting to think about Christmas presents. Anything to keep busy.

Welcome to Jake's Blog

Posted on October 28, 2007 by Carrie Wynkoop | Comments (5) |

Those of you who know us shouldn't be surprised that we've set up this blog for little Jake - just what took us so long! Well, we finally got around to putting it up and hope you like it. Thanks to Kelley Collins, our superstar designer, for coming up with the awesome header graphic and to Michael Richardson our amazing tech guy for his help getting the photos up and running!

Those of you who know me know that I'm not so into the whole blogging thing (yes, sacrilegious in our line of work) yet. But I'm going to attempt to change that by blogging here about Jake. Not sure how often I'll get around to posting stuff - especially for the first few weeks - but I'm hoping to keep it pretty up to date. Feel free to bug me if it looks like I'm falling behind - but beware, I might just ignore you ;) Enjoy and feel free to comment!
